How many days did I stay in Cebu?

July 6, 2009 - Posted in cebu vacation

Last year I spent summer vacation at my friend’s home in Cebu. It was a fun-filled time with lots of things to do, with our main activities being golf and tennis. We’d start in the early morning to play 18 holes (sometimes we’d extend to 27!), and in the evening we’d play doubles for at least three sets.

However we could play only one sport a day: we either played golf in the morning or played tennis in the evening, too strenuous!! And sometimes we didn’t play at all – a few times we were rained out, or just got plain lazy – and on those occasions we just stayed home all day.

On a total of 13 days we played either golf or tennis, but on seven mornings we didn’t do anything, and we just stayed home on 10 evenings. How many days did I spend in my friend’s house?

You stayed a total of 15 days.

8 mornings playing golf, 5 evenings of tennis, 2 days doing nothing because of rain or laziness.

That means a total of 13 playing days, seven mornings (15 mornings minus 8 golf mornings), 10 evenings (15 evenings minus 5 tennis evenings).

  2. You should have posted this in the Mathematics forum where you can have the following representations.

    Let

X = total number of days you were in Cebu
Y = number of times you played golf
Z = number of times you played tennis

    where Y + Z = 13 (given)

D= number of mornings you did not do anything = 7 (given)
N= number of evening you just stayed home = 10 (given)

Too many parameters involved in this problem … when you were rained out or just got plain lazy, does this fall under "D" or "N" as described above? Or, when you did not play at all, is this classified as "D" or "N" ?

Anyway, based on what you wrote, you did have a good time in Cebu and that is the only thing that really matters!

  5. You should have stayed at least 15 days for all the conditions to be met, but nothing in the conditions imply that you did not stay longer than that.
