I'm considering going there to see a friend. Is the city itself a nice vacation spot?
Yes, Manila has the famous sunset over Manila Bay.
They also have the:

- Fort Santiago
- San Agustin Church and Museum
- National Museum of the Philippines

- Malacanang Palace

Depends on your length of stay. I just got back and i spent 8 days on boracay island and only 3 days in Manila. I felt that it was long enough because its a very busy city and only good for shopping and gambling… by the way very cheap. But i really recomend going on a island if you need to chill out, the water up there is beautiful and the people very very friendly.

The question is how would like to spend your vacation?
Manila is only a place for Museums, Historical parks and such. But there's no natural sites there. But if you like history stuff of the Philippines, Manila is the place
Manila is mostly for work or business. Not a good place to recommend you to breath 'fresh' air and relax
)
Manila only have a VERY few tourist spots. But that's the place where you can find the 5-star hotels
The closest tourist spots are Tagaytay, Laguna, Batangas
Those spots are like a 1-and-half-hour to a 2-hour drive away from Manila
Mostly all of the Good vacation spots are there
Especially Palawan Island
But if you like Tourist spots that would certainly take your breath away try Visayas and Mindanao
And Boracay's good, too
The Philippines has many tourist spots
Too many to mention

Lets see it this way:
Either you like urban of a city or you like the white beach of one of the islands. Both are there so when you have time enough, combine it.
There are going busses from manila to puerto galera every morning to visit the nearest beach.
When you wantv to have fun in manila, no problem. there are bars enough to do so. Like LA in M.h.Del pilarstreet or Amazonia(same street) Or Gpoiint in padre faurastreet(walking Distance)
Good luck

Manila is a great city for doing business but not for relaxation. If you wanna relax try the Visayas. I wouldn't even recommend Boracay. The place is jampacked with people. why not try to visit Borongan, E. Samar. The road is bad, yes, but the rewards are great. Nice people, magnificent unpolluted beaches. You can even stay in an island for a day or two and experience how it is to live peacefully. There is a 3 star hotel here where u can stay. Very cheap room but nice service so far. If you are the adventurer type you can go on an eco-trip and discover hidden springs, waterfalls and caves. You can go surfing, skim boarding or just enjoy the clear waters of the pacific or just island hop. Contact me if u are interested. No fee.

yeah mate go there. Just to much fun and many things to do to pass it up. Take it from someone who has been there. Just be warned that its crazy busy and hectic at times but I'm sure you'll like the place.

Manila is like LA cars not moving due to traffic and pollution is just bad but that depends if you like the city. I only go to manila because thats the main starting point but try going to cebu, bohol , palawan, camiguin only if you like the nature, clear water, white sands, fresh air, affordable, nice people, cleaner, safe and peaceful!
Cebu also is a city but has less traffic and they have good beaches and some tourist spots!
