ONE HUNDRED TWENTY Russian tourists from Siberia will visit the country before the year ends and will have a more hospitable climate in celebrating the Russian Orthodox Christmas (Jan. 7) and New Year (Jan. 14), according to the Department of Tourism (DOT).
Verna Buensuceso, head of DOT’s Team Europe, said the group was expected to arrive in Manila on Dec. 27 on a chartered flight from the eastern Russian territory of Kamchatka.
Kamchatka, located in Northeast Asia, is part of Russia’s Siberian region, where residents experience harsh winters. It is usual for many to leave their homes at the time, taking vacations in warmer or tropical vacation spots overseas.
“This is the second time for the country to host a chartered flight from this region of Russia. Of note this year is the presence of members of the Kamchatka Divers Association. Despite the financial crisis, the Russian travel company Sputnik pushed aggressively for this charter, even canceling the regular charter program to Thailand in favor of the Philippines,” Buensuceso said in a statement.
The statement also quoted Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano as saying that he welcomed winter charter programs that boosted arrivals from Russia’s various regions.
Buensuceso said the Russians planned to visit Manila, Bohol, Cebu, Boracay and Mindoro.
They will stay in the Philippines until Jan. 15, 2010.
